  • Both psychiatric evaluation and psychological testing assess for mental health conditions, but they serve different purposes and involve different processes.

A psychiatric evaluation is conducted by a psychiatrist and involves a comprehensive assessment of a person's mental health. This typically includes a review of medical history, a discussion of symptoms, and an exploration of personal and family history. The goal is to diagnose mental health conditions and develop a treatment plan.

Psychological testing is usually conducted by a psychologist and involves the use of standardized tests and assessment tools to measure specific cognitive, emotional, and behavioral functions. These tests can provide in-depth information about a person's psychological functioning and are often used to diagnose learning disabilities, developmental disorders, or to better understand personality traits

Sometimes, an individual may benefit from both. If psychological testing is indicated, Dr. Ho can provide referrals.

  • No. Dr. Ho can provide referrals to a psychologist who can perform psychological testing.

  • Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who can prescribe medication and provide treatment for mental health conditions. They have extensive training in general medicine and psychiatry. Psychologists hold doctorate degrees in psychology, focusing on interventions such as therapy/counseling, behavioral interventions, psychological assessments, and more. While both professional types work to improve mental health, their approaches and qualifications differ. Some patients can benefit from evaluation from both professions.

  • Psychiatrists are licensed medical doctors who specialize in diagnosing and treating mental health disorders, with expertise in medication as part of treatment. They have completed medical school and a residency in psychiatry. Therapists and counselors, on the other hand, typically hold master's degrees in fields like psychology, counseling, or social work and focus on providing talk therapy and support to help individuals manage emotional and behavioral issues.

  • Dr. Ho is a psychiatrist who focuses on diagnosis, medication management and other integrative medicine approaches. At this time, Dr. Ho offers CBT-I (cognitive behavior therapy for insomnia). He does incorporate select principles from a variety of psychotherapy modalities into his appointments.

If a specific modality of psychotherapy will be helpful for you, Dr. Ho will discuss with you if he recommends regular therapy sessions with another therapist/counselor/psychologist and he can assist you with referrals. If you or your child already has an established therapist, Dr. Ho is glad to collaborate with your therapist.
